If your mail merge fails and in event viewer there is an error about "the RPC server is unavailable", it may be caused by Nuance / Dragon Naturally Speaking. We have observed this problem with version 12 of that software.
To fix the problem, remove the Nuance / Dragon plugin from Microsoft Word's Options -> Add-Ins -> COM Add-Ins area.
